China’s top respiratory disease specialist said on Tuesday that his country “defeated the current outbreak” of the new coronavirus, during a ceremony celebrating victory in eradicating covid-19.
“We defeated the current outbreak,” proclaimed Zhong Nanshan, who was honored by Chinese President Xi Jinping. The doctor warned, however, that the country cannot lower its guard.
Zhang became known in 2003 for his contribution to the fight against SARS – severe acute respiratory syndrome – another coronavirus that hit China at the time.
The expert defended international medical cooperation and emphasized the need for China’s greater contribution to global health.
During the ceremony, at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, three other specialists, in addition to Zhong, received the medal and the title of “Heroes of the People”. Dozens of health officials also received honorary degrees from the Chinese Communist Party.
More than half of the ceremony consisted of a speech by Xi Jinping.
“Covid-19 took us all by surprise,” said the Chinese president, who reviewed the measures taken by his country since the beginning of the pandemic, in order to contain the spread.
Xi recalled that China is “the first major economy to return to economic growth” and mentioned the contribution of the Asian country to share protective equipment and scientific knowledge with the rest of the world, where there are still suspicions about the initial management of the outbreak. by the Chinese authorities.
Xi Jinping again defended that China communicated the outbreak to the World Health Organization as soon as possible and defended that there is still work to be done: “A complete victory requires continuous effort.”
During the ceremony there was a minute of silence dedicated to those who died from the disease.
The ceremony took place on the same day that the National Health Commission of China guaranteed that there is currently not a single site among the 175 cases of active infection by the new coronavirus, detailing that all are travelers from abroad.
