Ana João Rodrigues, an ICVS researcher at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Minho, received a grant from the European Research Council (ERC) in the amount of about two million euros for her research project in neuroscience, it was announced today.

“It is a dream come true”. Ana João Rodrigues highlights that this is the culmination of many years of effort and the role of the team and the institution on this path: “We only managed to get here because we were lucky to be in an institution that believes in our work and gives us freedom to develop ourselves. ambitious projects and a little ‘out of the box’ ”.

The proposal of the team led by the neuroscientist seeks to understand how the brain perceives and encodes pleasure and aversion. “We try to understand how the neurons in our brain can tell if the stimulus is positive or the stimulus is negative,” he explains.

“An ERC scholarship is basically the recognition by peers, at an international level, of the research excellence of a team and that makes me very proud,” he highlights. Ana João Rodrigues adds that this “is a mark of quality in scientific research that any scientist wants to achieve”.

This ERC Consolidation Scholarship is the first awarded to ICVS and the Faculty of Medicine. These scholarships are awarded to researchers in the middle of their career, that is, who have between seven and 12 years of experience, after completing their doctorate.
