The Public Ministry opened an investigation to investigate the death of Alfredo Quintana, goalkeeper for FC Porto and the national handball team. The athlete could not resist a cardiopulmonary arrest of which he was a victim and died last month at the São João Hospital, in Porto, at the age of 32.
“As with any death report whose causes are unknown, the Public Ministry determined that an investigation must be initiated with a view to knowing the cause of death,” the Prosecutor’s Office told the PUBLIC, in a written response. The investigation to determine the motive for the death of the handball star is being carried out by the Porto Department of Investigation and Criminal Action.
The player suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest on February 22, during a training session. Second or that was notified, the National Institute of Medical Emergency was called to or local and was used a defibrillator, I had or Portuguese-Cuban net guard, resuscitated and transported in critical condition to the Hospital de São João, where I went to die for a few days later. Of the three most important clubs in Portugal, FC Porto is the only one that does not have an Automatic External Defibrillation Program, as required by law, and which is considered essential in order not to lose life when someone suffers a cardiorespiratory arrest. For this reason, in addition, a national mandatory application program was created.
This requirement covers places of public access such as commercial establishments of relevant size, airports and commercial ports, railway, metro and bus stations and sports, leisure and recreational areas, with a capacity of more than five thousand people.
According to the law that made the program mandatory in spaces such as football stadiums, FC Porto incurs a fine that can reach up to 44,500 euros. The law is from 2012 and gave a two-year period for adaptation.
Given that FC Porto is in default, at least since 2014, the PUBLIC questioned the Ministry of Health to find out whether or not a sanction would be applied. But the only response we got from the Ministry of Health was that “the Government created a Working Group for the Development of the National Plan for Automatic External Defibrillation (AED), with the aim of promoting the dissemination and use of AEDs in Portugal and improving the access of cardiopulmonary arrest victims to this measure life jacket”.
The Ministry of Health also says that this Working Group ”, constituted by Order No. 2530/2020, of February 24, has the mission of preparing an Action Plan for the implementation of the recommendations contained in the Final Report of the Group of work. . Work created by Order No. 2715/2018, of March 15, and other measures that are relevant to achieve the proposed objective, including proposals to modify the legal framework ”.
The PUBLIC also questioned FC Porto again, through various means, to see if, before the arrival of the INEM, a defibrillator was used to save Quintana and if it was working correctly, since it does not have an AED program. . -medical personnel to use it. It was also asked if there were medical personnel at the scene, but there was no response.
The death of the handball player caused several reactions. The FC Porto management decided to remove the club’s number 1 handball jersey, in honor of the athlete. In a message of condolences published on the website of the Presidency of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa wrote that handball and Portuguese sport are poorer with this “early game that scares everyone”. The Lions Club shared a similar message on social media: “Sport is getting poorer today. Sporting sends its deepest condolences to Porto’s family, friends and the entire family. Goodbye, Alfredo Quintana ”.
