Several policemen had to protect themselves behind benches, lampposts and other objects on a street in Cova da Moura, in Amadora, after some 15 shots were fired, allegedly by residents of that neighborhood.

There were no injuries or history of damage, but PSP agents, also threatened with death, were forced to evacuate the neighborhood. The case happened Sunday night and is being investigated. Above all, because Cova da Moura has been the scene of violent attacks against the PSP.

The last one occurred after a fire that broke out in an existing house in the neighborhood. According to the Amadora firefighters, the alert was given at 9:13 p.m. and eight men traveled to the scene, supported by an urban fire engine and an ambulance.

Even before 10 p.m., the fire was said to have been extinguished and firefighters fled the scene, with the help of a PSP team, meanwhile deployed to set up a security cordon. On that occasion, a car that was circulating in the vicinity stopped the march and several shots were fired from the inside.

Hearing the shots and seeing the flash of a firearm coming from the car, the policemen ran to take cover behind the posts and cars parked there and, from there, heard a second burst of shots. Then reinforcements were called in and, within minutes, a patrol, even under death threats, was already helping their comrades to withdraw from the neighborhood.

The PSP Lisbon Command source confirmed to JN that the shots did not injure or damage the vehicles. She added that the perpetrators of the shots were not identified, nor was the motivation and objective of the shots determined.

Crash history

The only certainty is that this was not the first attack on the police in Cova da Moura. At the end of September, a routine patrol in the vicinity of the neighborhood ended with the shooting of the PSP and one person arrested for drug possession. At the time, there were also no reports of injuries or property damage, but two vehicles were impounded.

In June, the PSP was forced to use the baton and shoot into the air to prevent some 30 people from pulling an injured vehicle from the curb where it was immobilized. v

Lots of people on the street

Many neighbors were on the street watching the fighting when the shots were heard. The fire that broke out in the room also did not cause injuries.

Black police insult

In the June clashes, two men were arrested for resisting and coercing police officers. Both were also accused of racial discrimination, for insulting and threatening a black agent.
