The PSP and the GNR disagreed this Monday, in Évora, on which of the two forces is responsible for escorting the vans that carry covid-19 vaccines.

The unusual incident occurred at the Évora Hospital, after the van that transported the doses destined for this establishment, from Coimbra, had unloaded the material. According to TVI, the PSP later blocked the distribution van, preventing it from leaving. Interior Minister Eduardo Cabrita has already called for an urgent investigation into the incident.

The episode occurred due to a conflict of interest, since, on the one hand, the escort for the transport of vaccines is in charge of GNR but, on the other, the PSP has jurisdiction in urban areas.

The blockade ended up delaying the transport of vaccines to hospitals in Baixo Alentejo and Algarve. The situation would have been resolved after the hierarchies of the police forces decided that both would escort the vaccine transport van.

Open government investigation

However, the Government has already reacted to the episode. Through a note sent to the editorial offices, the Ministry of Internal Administration (MAI) said that it had determined “the opening of an urgent investigation by the General Inspector of Internal Administration (IGAI).”

The MAI also requested “information on the traffic monitoring and cleaning rules defined to make this distribution effective” from the Secretary General of the National Security System.

The situation could be repeated in the Algarve

After Évora, the van would depart for Beja, where it would have an estimated arrival time of 6 p.m., JN learned. However, he only arrived at the city hospital around 8:30 p.m. He was accompanied by a total of six vehicles and a PSP motorcycle, to which he was joined by two GNR pickups.

The GNR / vaccine transport group went to the Algarve, where they should also deliver a vaccine stock. The JN learned that, upon arrival in Faro, the PSP should adopt the same procedure, joining the military GNR in the escort.
