PSD-Lisbon returns to the accusation for wearing a mask on the street and fines for those who do not comply | COVID-19

PSD-Lisboa does not give up and continues to insist that the use of a mask on the street should be mandatory, considering that the existence of inspections and fines is essential for this.

In a statement titled Reopen safely, signed by the president of PSD-Lisbon, Luís Newton recalls that for “two months” it has been “due to the mandatory use of a mask in public spaces”, mocking that, also two months ago, that the Government, the Directorate General of Health (DGS) and the Lisbon City Council “look at the horizon, as if it were difficult to see what is happening in other European countries.”

“Today it is clear to everyone that people have to go back to work, children and young people to school and for that transportation has to work, restaurants and shops have to be open, in short, the country has to be operational . The economy cannot handle a new shutdown “, defends the social democrat, adding that” the use of the mask is a fundamental tool to stop the spread of covid-19, as well as that of the flu and other diseases that, upon returning to the school, they threaten to leave. “The National Health Service will not respond if nothing is done.”

For the PSD PSD council in Lisbon, “inspection” and “fines” are also “essential to internalize the simple gesture of wearing a mask.”

“At a time when the Government is preparing the terms and conditions for the state of contingency as of September 15, I come to demand that the use of a mask in public be one of the new rules that will be presented”, writes Luís Newton, also appealing that “the DGS, for once, ‘ponders’ quickly” and that “it is not late in relation to the World Health Organization (WHO), which already in itself”, criticizes, “has the sad habit of being late related to scientific evidence ”.

The appeals of the Social Democrat also extend to the President of the Republic to “intercede with the Government so that, like many European countries and cities, the use of the mask is mandatory.”

“Lack of respect for others can be dramatic in the times to come. Always wear a mask. For you. For others ”, writes Luís Newton.

It is not the first time that the Social Democrats have launched this appeal. In July, the PSD bank of the Lisbon Municipal Assembly issued a statement, also signed by the bank leader Luís Newton, defending the mandatory use of masks in any public space, interior or exterior, and proposing that the executive advance with a mandate . in that sense.

The insistence on the idea comes at a time when several European countries are adopting more restrictive measures on the use of masks, even in open spaces, and when the general director of Health, Graça Freitas, also admitted that she is studying the possibility to make the use of a mask mandatory in public places, even outdoors; this will depend on the risk associated with that location, the time of day, and the number of people in it. DGS is “revising” the rules and guidelines regarding the use of masks, not only in public places, but also by children.

In Madeira, for example, the mask is already compulsory on the street and will also be in schools for children over 6 years of age.

The mandatory use of a mask on the street has also been recommended by the Portuguese Medical Association and advocated by the Portuguese Lung Foundation.
