The contract was announced by the City Council of Viana do Castelo, on Friday, to start this Monday and is causing a wave of protest on social media. It also led to the launch of an online petition against the felling of trees and also to several movements to hold protests from Monday to dawn at the site.

The Cabedelo neighborhood association joined the contest. “All people and the media are invited to appear tomorrow at 8 in the morning on Avenida do Cabedelo, next to the
“New” building of the Scouts and the Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Areias, in order to prevent irreparable damage from materializing, “writes the association in a statement released tonight, considering that the massacre of bananas” results from the poor execution and planning of the works for access to the maritime port of Viana do

“The Cabedelo Neighbors Association is clearly against the unjustified killing of bananas as they constitute irreversible damage,” he says. The Viana do Castelo City Council justifies the slaughter of 20 bananas out of the 170 existing on the site, with the construction of a roundabout that will serve the new accesses to the seaport.

The municipality says that “to minimize the impact, it plans to plant 200 native resinous and leafy trees with a large carbon reserve capacity, as is the case of Pinheiro-Bravo and Sobreiro over the next two years in various areas of Cabedelo.”

“The objective of this action, which will cost around 30 thousand euros, is to restore, but also to reinforce, the CO2 sequestration capacity in that territory and also contribute to the improvement of the landscape, climate comfort and the places that can be enjoy ”, says the Chamber in a statement, noting that the construction of the new roundabout” will allow access to the new 8.8 km highway that connects the A28 with the Port of Viana do Castelo in São Romão de Neiva, with two 3.5 meter wide lanes “. And he adds that the new route aims to “decongest urban roads from heavy vehicle traffic, eliminating heavy traffic from and to the interior of the Darque parish to and from Porto de Mar”.
