The Azoreans are summoned this Sunday to the polls to define the distribution of the 57 seats of the Regional Legislative Assembly, which will lead to the next government of the Autonomous Region. According to the projection of the Catholic University, the PS should win but may fail by an absolute majority. We update here all the information about the electoral day in the archipelago.

8:13 pm – CDS-PP foresees “long night”
In the first reaction, Félix Rodrigues, head of the CDS-PP, considers that the projection shows a result that is within the expected.
“We will see what role the CDS will play at the regional level, in a context (…) in which we will not have an absolute majority government,” he adds, considering that this will be a “long night”, since there are still many “blurred “.
20h09 – PSD underlines the Azores “will for change”
Luís Pereira, PSD campaign director, praised the reduction in abstention even in a pandemic situation.
In reaction to the projection revealed by RTP, the improvement in the result of the Social Democrats in relation to the 2016 elections stands out.
Luís Pereira also highlights the loss of votes for the PS, a sign of the voters’ “will for change”.
Asked about a possible Azorean “contraption” to the right, with the PSD and other political forces, the official no longer wanted to answer the journalists. and sends a response when the specific results of the election are known.
8:00 pm – Screening. PS wins but can fail by absolute majority
According to the survey by the Catholic University for RTP, the PS should reach between 37 and 41 percent of the vote. In other words, they will be able to elect between 26 and 30 terms, which does not guarantee an absolute majority of entry.
Given that the Regional Legislative Assembly has 57 seats, the party needs at least 29 terms to obtain an absolute majority.
I or PSD should get between 32 and 36 percent of the vote, with a minimum of 19 deputies and a maximum of 22 deputies in the Regional Assembly.
Here are the CDS-PP and Chega, each with 3 to 6 percent of the votes, being able to choose between one to three deputies.
THE The Bloco de Esquerda is the fifth political force, with 2 to 5 percent of the votes, between one and two deputies.
According to the projection, the PAN will have between 2 and 3 percent, and it is expected to be able to elect a deputy. Follow CDU-PP, with 1 to 2 percent, being able to elect a maximum of two deputies.
A Liberal Initiative and the PPM each one has 1 to 2 percent of the votes, and each political force may elect a maximum of one deputy.
If confirmed, Basta, PAN and Liberal Initiative today they will be able to win the first places in the regional assembly.
This survey was conducted by CESOP – Universidade Católica Portuguesa for RTP on October 25, 2020. The target universe is the voters in the regional legislative elections of the Azores. Twenty-four parishes from the two districts with the highest number of voters (São Miguel and Terceira) were selected, in order to guarantee that the average of the electoral results of the last elections in this group of parishes (weighted the electoral weight of their districts) were less than 1 percentage point of the results of the most voted candidates in each election. Respondents were randomly selected from their polling places and asked to simulate voting at the polls. 8568 valid queries were obtained. The response rate was 84%.
7:32 pm – Abstention in the Azores can reach 58 percent
According to the estimate of participation in the elections for the Regional Assembly of the Azores, abstention in the regional elections will be between 52 and 58 percent.
The estimate is based on the results of voter turnout at 4:00 pm and predicts that between 42 and 48 percent of voters voted in this poll.
In the last elections, in 2016, abstention in the Azores regions reached 59.16%, an absolute record that exceeded the 53.34% abstention of 2008.

The turnout at the polls in the elections for the Regional Legislative Assembly of the Azores was, at 4:00 p.m. local time (5:00 p.m. in Lisbon), by 32.68%, higher than that registered four years ago.
74,512 voters voted, 227,999 of which are registered.
3:23 pm – Participation data during the morning
Participation in regional legislative elections in the Azores was 9.16 percent until 11 a.m. local time (plus one hour in Lisbon), according to data from the Regional Directorate for Organization and Public Administration.
In the universe of 227,999 voters, 20,875 had, up to that moment, exercised their right to vote.
In 2016, turnout at the polls was 7.47 percent as of 11 am local time (12 pm Lisbon).
2:51 p.m. – Current situation
PS, PSD, CDS-PP, Left Block, CDU, PPM, Liberal Initiative, Free, PAN, Enough, Alliance, MPT and PCTP / MRPP are the political forces that are candidates for the Legislative Assembly of the Azores.
227,999 voters are registered in the registry.
In the last elections, four years ago, the Socialists won with 46.4 percent of the vote, resulting in 30 seats in the regional Parliament. The second most voted party, the PSD, obtained 30.89 percent of the votes, guaranteeing 19 seats. It was followed by the CDS-PP, with 7.1 percent, which was translated into four terms.
Common Punctuation Of 3.6 percent, the Left Bloc won two terms, while the coalition between communists and the Ecological Party “Os Verdes” secured a seat by gathering 2.6 percent of the votes. PPM, with 0.93 percent, also elected a deputy to the Regional Legislative Assembly.
The Socialist Party has been at the forefront of the fate of the autonomous region for 24 years, after the Social Democrats ruled the Azores from 1976 to 1996.
Vasco Cordeiro, successor to Carlos César, who has led the Azores executive since 2012, is seeking a third and final term.
