Professor Flavio wins world competition that rewards excellence in teaching

Jorge Teixeira, a teacher at Dr. Júlio Martins Secondary School, in Chaves, won the “Global Teacher Award 2020”. A global competition that rewards excellence in teaching and its contribution to building society, based on inspiring teaching.

In 2018 Jorge Teixeira was considered the best teacher in Portugal by the “Global Teacher Prize” contest and in 2019 he was on the list of the 50 best teachers in the world. The recognition did not end there, and in a year marked by the Covid-19 pandemic, the Physics and Chemistry teacher, from Dr. Júlio Martins High School, in Chaves, won the 3rd edition of the “Global Teacher Award 2020 & Teacher Inspiraton Week “, a contest based in India.

A recognition of the “AKS Education Awards”, which annually rewards teachers from all over the world who stand out for the excellence and effectiveness of their teaching, their involvement with the community and the development of educational programs.

Flavio’s teacher is thus considered exceptional in an academic year that put the professionalism and adaptability of the Portuguese teachers to the test.

It was in this context of a pandemic that the teacher applied in February and participated in the contest until reaching the stage of presenting a practical experimental work, carried out in a state of emergency with the 10th grade students of the Júlio Martins School.

The project “Practical Experimental Work in the COVID-19 Era” focused on distance learning using graphing calculators and micro: bits (a single board “computer” used to teach basic concepts of computing and computer programming) .

This award culminates with a week of lectures and a ceremony that will take place online on November 22.
