The theme “vocational education students versus access to higher education” is not exactly new. In March, the Council of Ministers approved the law that will allow vocational education students to access higher education without having to take national exams.

However, it is now known that vocational education students will have to take regional exams.

Professional education students will take regional exams at the institution closest to their area of residence. After the evaluation, they will be able to find out if they can apply to all the universities and polytechnics that open vacancies for special competitions.

According to the newspaper Público today, students completing professional education, for whom a new way of accessing higher education was created starting this year, will experience a model that is new in Portugal: regional exams, scheduled for September .

The newspaper said, with information provided by the president of the Coordinating Council of the Higher Polytechnic Institutes (CCISP), Pedro Dominguinhos, that three consortiums, in the north, center and south of the country, will carry out specific tests to classify the candidates.

Each student will take only one entrance exam, in the institution closest to their area of residence and with that result, they can apply to all the universities and polytechnics in the region that open vacancies for these special competitions.

At the moment, two consortia are formalized. One in the north, which includes the Bragança, Porto, Cávado and Ave and Viana do Castelo polytechnics, and the other in the south, with the Setúbal, Santarém, Portalegre and Beja polytechnics, as well as the Higher School of Hospitality and Tourism of Estoril and Nautical School Infante D. Henrique, in Oeiras. This network is also part of the University of the Algarve, which has a polytechnic education.

The third consortium, in the Centro region, involving polytechnics like Coimbra and Leiria, has not yet been completed, according to Pedro Dominguinhos.

The University of Aveiro, which also has a polytechnic education, can also join the consortium.
