Russian prison services gave Kremlin opponent Alexei Navalny one day to return to the country, where he was expected to serve a suspended prison sentence.
On Monday, the Federal Penitentiary Service said so Navalny is in violation of the sentence that was imposed in 2014 for corruption. Authorities cite an article from the medical journal Lancet, who says that the symptoms caused by the poisoning stopped having effects on October 12, to affirm that there is no justification for the politician to remain outside the country.
“The convicted person is not fulfilling all his obligations before the court and escapes the supervision of the Criminal Inspection”, says the letter from the prison service. Navalny’s probationary period ends on Wednesday.
Navalny went to Germany in August, after being poisoned at an airport in Siberia. The doctors who treated him concluded that the main face of the opposition to President Vladimir Putin was poisoned with the nerve agent Novichok, commonly used by the Russian secret services.
Several European countries have accused the Russian state of being behind the Navalny assassination attempt. Putin recently denied any involvement of the secret services and questioned whether his opponent was poisoned.
The letter addressed to Navalny He did not mention a specific date for his return, but the opponent posted a message sent to his lawyer saying that he would have to return to Russia at 9 am this Tuesday (minus three hours in mainland Portugal), according to Al-Jazeera.
In October, Navalny had expressed his desire to return to his country to resume his political activity.
Navalny spokeswoman Kira Iarmish said a return would be impossible anytime soon as the politician continues to recover from the poisoning. “There is no possibility that he can appear tomorrow at the Moscow Criminal Inspection [terça-feira]. Navalny has become, in recent years, the main representative of the Russian opposition, mainly for denouncing cases of corruption that involve leaders close to Putin.
