The Constitutional Court (TC) received documentation from nine citizens until Thursday at 4:00 pm to run for the presidential elections on January 24, the source of the secretary general of that sovereign body assured the Lusa agency.

After the deadline for the delivery of documentation, the official source of the TC only sent the information of “how many [candidaturas] will draw [marcado para as 11:30] for the assignment of the order number in the bulletins ”.

Until this Thursday, seven candidates have publicly expressed their intention and have delivered to the Constitutional Court, before the media, a minimum of 7,500 voter signatures.

Namely: the current head of state, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the former PS MEP Ana Gomes, the sole deputy and president of Chega, André Ventura, the MEP and member of the BE council, Marisa Matias, the MEP and the leader from the PCP summit, João Ferreira, the leader of the Liberal Initiative Tiago Mayan and the former mayor Vitorino Silva (“Tino de Rans”), now president of the RIR (Reacir, Include, Recycle).

However, according to the same source from the General Secretariat, which this Thursday was open despite the time tolerance to comply with the deadline stipulated by law, there could have been proposals through the mail, for example.

Another citizen, named Eduardo Batista, also attended the TC on the same day as Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Marisa Matias and André Ventura, for example, and will have delivered documentation to compete for the Palace of Belém.

Although the drawing is scheduled for Monday morning, the Ratton Palace judges have until January 4 to verify the admissibility of the nominations, that is, the number of signatures.

An appeal period follows for applications deemed ineligible or irregular and the final decision is made until January 11.

Five years ago, there was an absolute record of 10 presidential candidacies admitted by the TC: businessman Henrique Neto, university student Sampaio da Nóvoa, doctor Cândido Ferreira, communist leader Edgar Silva, psychologist Jorge Sequeira, “Tino de Rans”, Marisa Matias, the former socialist ruler María de Belém, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and the former mayor of Porto Paulo Morais.

Elections for the Belém Palace are scheduled for January 24, 2021, but it is possible to vote in advance between January 12 and 20.

This possibility is aimed at people in home confinement due to the covid-19 pandemic, emigrants or workers displaced abroad and other citizens who prefer to exercise their right in an electoral college other than their own throughout the country (January 17 in any municipality).
