The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, will schedule the presidential elections for January 24 of next year. The announcement was made this Tuesday by the head of state to the parties that are being heard at the Belém Palace, about the State Budget for 2021 (OE2021) and the state of emergency.

“The President of the Republic also informed us that, on November 24, he will mark the presidential elections for January 24, 2021”, revealed the parliamentary leader of the Ecological Party “Os Verdes” (ENV), José Luís Ferreira. , after the meeting with the Head of State.

A few minutes earlier, the president and sole deputy of Chega, André Ventura, had also said that the presidential elections would probably be scheduled for January 24, 2021.

The President of the Republic will therefore respect the tradition that elections for the Presidency of the Republic are held on the penultimate Sunday of January, in case a second round is necessary in February. This is because, according to electoral laws, the presidential term begins on March 9 and for a first-round election to take place, the most voted candidate must have more than 50% of the votes.

The Electoral Law of the President of the Republic establishes that “the first vote for the election to the Presidency of the Republic” must be scheduled by the current Head of State, in this case, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, “with at least 60 days in advance “. . In the case of a second round, it takes place “on the twenty-first day after the first”, between the two most voted candidates.

In 2016, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was elected in the first round, with 52% of the votes.
