Due to the high number of new cases and deaths related to covid-19, the Council of Ministers decided that there will be movement restrictions in 121 Portuguese municipalities, between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. On Saturdays and Sundays, these restrictions will be between 1:00 pm and 5:00 am, with exceptions for urgent trips.

Body temperature measurement may be required at the entrance to public institutions and workplaces and diagnostic tests can be performed, for example, when visiting health facilities. Due to the seriousness of the situation, private health resources can be requested.

Various sectors of Portuguese society can also be used to try to combat the pandemic, such as the armed forces.

Exceptions during curfew

The document approved by the President of the Republic provides for several exceptions, such as trips for the performance of professional functions and in the exercise of the respective functions. These points include health professionals and other workers from health institutions, civil protection agents, military forces, ASAE inspectors, magistrates, ministers and personnel in diplomatic missions.

Health trips, trips to grocery stores and supermarkets, and emergency shelters for victims of domestic violence can be made. The document provides for trips for “imperative” family reasons and for the care of vulnerable people and trips “necessary for the exercise of freedom of the press.”

There are also short walks with relatives, pedestrian walks for pets, trips for urgent reasons and return home as part of the trips mentioned above.
