The Portuguese replaces the Russian as commissioner.

Russian Vitaly Petrov was replaced on Saturday as a member of the commissioners panel of the Formula 1 Portuguese Grand Prix, after his father was shot and killed in Russia, the International Automobile Federation (FIA) announced.

Petrov’s choice to join the commissioners panel was criticized by Britain’s Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) for the former Russian driver’s anti-racist positions.

Petrov, 36, was replaced by Bruno Correia from the Algarve, who regularly runs the “safety car” at the Formula E World Cup and the World Touring Car Cup (WTCR).

Petrov’s father was shot dead at his home in the city of Vyborg.

The Portuguese Grand Prix, which takes place on Sunday at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, in Portimão, is the twelfth race of the season and marks the return of Formula 1, 24 years after the last passage of the “Grande Circo” by territory national.
