The second free practice session in Portimão had two interruptions
As in the morning, the Finn Valtteri Bottas was the fastest, standing out in the second free practice session of the Portuguese Grand Prix, which started this Friday at the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve.
The Mercedes driver had a better lap of 1’17.940, 595 milliseconds faster than Dutchman Max Verstappen (Red Bull) and 803 faster than Briton Lando Norris (McLaren).
However, this session was not peaceful, with two red flags. The first was after Pierre Gasly’s (Alpha Tauri’s) car caught fire: the Frenchman escaped unharmed.
In the second, almost immediately after the restart, there was an accident between Verstappen and Lance Stroll (Racing Point), at the end of the finish line and which is being analyzed by the stewards.
Thus, the drivers did not have the full session time to adapt to the Portimão track, but in the first half hour, the drivers were able to test the new Pirelli tire prototypes for 2021, during which time Verstappen was the best performer. (1m21, 575 s).
This Saturday, between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m., the third free practice session will take place, while qualifying begins at 2 p.m.
The Formula 1 Portuguese Grand Prix is the twelfth race of the Formula 1 World Championship, on the return of the Grand Circus to Portugal after 24 years.
