In Portugal, in the last 24 hours, 14 more people died from the covid-19 pandemic and 1,249 additional cases of infection were confirmed (an increase of 1.44% over the previous year). According to the epidemiological bulletin of the General Health Directorate (DGS) this Monday (October 12), in total, since the pandemic began, 87,913 infected, 53,498 recovered (more than 311), 2,094 deaths have been registered in the country.
There is, at this moment, 32,321 active Portuguese patients to be monitored by the health authorities, 924 more than yesterday.
Most of those infected in the last 24 hours are in North Region (plus 602 – 48.2% of the total) and in Lisbon and the Tagus Valley (505 – 40.4%). It is followed by the Center (more than 87), the Algarve (more than 27), the Alentejo (15), Madeira (ten) and the Azores (three).
For five consecutive days, the number of new cases has exceeded the 1,000 mark. The peak of people infected in the pandemic was reached last Sunday (10), when 1649 cases were reported.
All the dead were over 70 years old.
As for the 14 new deaths registered, these are distributed by the North (eight) and Lisbon and Vale do Tejo (six).
The fatal victims are seven men and seven women. Among these, there were nine people over the age of 80 and five between 70 and 79.
The country’s overall death rate is now 2,38%, reaching 12.7% in the case of people over 70 years of age, the main fatalities.
34 more people hospitalized
877 patients are hospitalized, that is, 34 more than the previous day. There are now 128 people in intensive care, four fewer than the day before.
Today’s DGS bulletin also indicates that health authorities are monitoring 48,844 contacts of infected people (431 more than yesterday).
37.7 million cases worldwide
The new coronavirus has infected more than 37.7 million people around the world as of this Monday and has caused 1,081,841 deaths, according to official data. Now there are 28.3 million recovered.
In total, the United States of America is the country with the highest concentration of cases (7,991,998) and deaths (219,695). As for the number of accumulated infected in the world, they are followed by India (7,120,538), Brazil (5,094,979) and Russia (1 312 310). Portugal appears in 48th place in this table.
In terms of deaths, after the United States, Brazil is the nation with the most reported deaths (150,506), followed by India (109,184) and Mexico (83,781).
