The automotive market needs to recover quickly from the impact of the new coronavirus. The numbers are not encouraging and reveal that only vehicles in the premium segment, despite poor results, managed to better escape the effect of this pandemic.

According to a study by the European Federation for Transport and Environment, Portugal currently ranks fifth among the countries that sell the most electric cars.

According to information from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), in the first eight months of this year, passenger car sales in the European Union had a significant drop.

The ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers Association) foresees a market drop, at the European level, between 20 and 25%, so that the decline in the Portuguese automobile market continues to be much higher than the European average. Porsche was the brand with the least drop in sales.

For Portugal, and according to ACAP, in the period from January to September 2020, 127,168 new vehicles were put into circulation, which represented a year-on-year decrease of 38.4%. BMW and Mercedes-Benz were among the brands that best resisted.

Portugal is among the European countries where the most electric cars are sold, in the total number of cars sold. Therefore, it ranks fifth, according to a study by the European Federation for Transport and Environment, reveals Lusa.

Only ahead of Portugal are the Netherlands (13%), Finland (15%), Sweden (26%) and Norway, in first place. Norway had 68% of sales and is also the only country in Europe where trams account for more than half of all electric cars sold.

In the first half of 2020, 11% of the cars sold in Portugal were electric cars, with hybrid and 100% electric vehicles occupying a similar space in the automotive market (around 6% each, in total sales).

The share of electric cars in total sales is expected to reach 10% in Europe by the end of the year. This translates to around one million cars, double the number recorded in 2019, and around 1.8 million in 2020.
