On the day that exceeds the barrier of four thousand deaths from covid-19, Portugal registers another 3,919 infected, maintaining the downward trend of recent days. For the first time, there are more than 500 inpatients in the ICU.

There are already 4,056 deaths caused by the new virus since the start of the pandemic in March. This Tuesday’s epidemiological bulletin from the Directorate General of Health (DGS) shows that, at midnight, another 85 people died. Almost 60% of the victims (50) were registered in the North, followed by Lisbon and the Tagus Valley, where 20 people died, the Center, with 12 dead, and the Alentejo, with three. Fifty people, 20 men and 30 women, were 80 years old or older, and twelve, eight men and four women, were between 70 and 79 years old. 10 people in their sixties (eight men and two women) and a man from the 50-59 age group also died.

OR the number of hospitalized patients continues to record successive highs: after yesterday the DGS report reported 491 patients in intensive care units (ICU), the number rose today to 506 (plus eight), the first time since the start of the pandemic that the value exceeds half a thousand. In the infirmary there were still not so many people hospitalized with covid-19 (3,275, 34 more than yesterday). On the other hand, there are now 184,233 recovered, 7,406 more compared to Monday. Calculations made, subtracting the number of deaths and recoveries from the total number of infected people, there are now 80,432 active patients, 3,572 less than yesterday.

North with 58% of new infected

New cases continue to decline. After the number of infections dropped to 4,788 on Sunday and 4,044 on Monday, today’s bulletin features 3,919 new infections, raising to 268,721 or total number of cases. It should be remembered that it is common for the number of new infections to be lower in the first days of each week, since, on weekends, fewer diagnostic tests are performed, as there are fewer open laboratories. In any case, the number of new infected today is the lowest in 13 days, since November 10, when 3,817 infections were counted.

Looking at the regions in isolation, the North now has 2,284 more infections (representing 58% of the current total), bringing the total number of cases in the region to 139,905. Lisbon and the Tagus Valley add another 1018 cases (in 91,053), the Center plus 446 (in 25,949), the Alentejo plus 83 (5320) and the Algarve plus 65 (4870). In the Azores archipelago, there are 18 more infected (a total of 828) and Madeira has another five (796).
