Portugal exceeds 10,000 cases. Hospitalizations have increased for 5 consecutive days

On the day the European Medicines Agency approved Moderna’s vaccine against covid-19, Portugal for the first time exceeded 10,000 daily cases. In the last 24 hours, 91 deaths and 10,027 cases of contagion by the new coronavirus have been reported.

Data from the epidemiological bulletin of the General Directorate of Health (DGS) this Wednesday (January 6) show that it is the largest daily increase in infections since the beginning of the pandemic, exceeding the maximum registered on December 31, the day in Se 7,627 cases were reported.

In just three days, between Monday and Wednesday, 19,352 new cases of the disease were confirmed. There are 7,874 more compared to the same period last week.

In total, since the start of the pandemic, the country has confirmed 446,606 covid-19 diagnoses and 7,377 deaths, according to the health authority.

In addition to the increase in new cases of covid-19, the number of hospitalizations continues to increase. In Portuguese hospitals, there are 3,293 hospitalized patients with the disease (33 more than on Tuesday), of which 513 (one more) are in intensive care units.

DGS data reveals that this is the 5th consecutive day to register an increase in hospitalizations. In the case of intensive care, we have seen an increase in the number of patients hospitalized for the sixth consecutive day.
