Portugal may reach three thousand new cases of contagion by Covid-19, the Minister of Health, Marta Temido, warned this Wednesday at a joint press conference at the General Directorate of Health.

“The available models point to a growth that can approach three thousand cases of contagion by Covid-19 in Portugal if we do not have the necessary attention,” warned the minister.

Prime Minister António Costa announced this Wednesday, after the Council of Ministers meeting, that it was decided to raise the alert level for the State of Calamity for the entire national territory. This measure, António Costa explained, stems from the evolution of the pandemic in Portugal, a situation that the prime minister described as “serious.”

Regarding the transition from the State of Contingency to the State of Calamity, António Costa justified this situation as the possibility that the Government “can adopt, when necessary, the measures that are justified to contain the pandemic, from circulation restrictions to other measures to be justified ”.

For the prime minister, “it is essential to safeguard the ability of the NHS to respond to Covid patients and all assistance activities that do not belong to Covid”, but also that “teaching activities continue without incident”, as well as “avoid measures that contribute to deepening the measures that threaten employment and family income ”.

Portugal has a total of 91,193 confirmed cases of Covid-19, 2,072 more than the previous day, reveals the epidemiological bulletin of the General Directorate of Health (DGS) published this Wednesday, October 14. The number of deaths from the new coronavirus in the country rose to 2,117, with seven more deaths in the last 24 hours.

The DGS reveals that there are currently 34,661 cases registered in the North (plus 1,001), 7,348 in the Center (plus 273), 44,778 in Lisbon and Vale do Tejo (plus 802), 2,067 in the Algarve (plus 42), 305 cases in the Autonomous Region of Azores (five more), 300 in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (three more) and 1,724 cases in Alentejo (another 47).
