Portugal breaks record of hospitalized patients with covid-19

The bulletin of the General Directorate of Health (DGS) records 78 additional deaths and 3,262 new confirmed cases of the new coronavirus. The country registers a record in the number of people hospitalized.

In the last 24 hours, there are less than 224 active cases of the new coronavirus in Portugal: 80,614 in total. With more than 78 fatalities, Portugal stands at 4,505 confirmed deaths since the start of the pandemic. In total, since March (when the first SARS-CoV-2 case was recorded), there have been 298,061 confirmed cases. In one day, an additional 3,408 people recovered, for a total of 212,942 patients who were cured of covid-19 disease.

According to the DGS bulletin, there are less than 11 people hospitalized in intensive care, but 525 patients still need more care in these units. In total, 3,342 people hospitalized with covid-19 in Portuguese hospitals (a record since the start of the pandemic) – in one day another 97 patients were admitted to health services.

The northern region continues to have the highest figures for this pandemic: there are 42 more deaths and 1,795 more infected in 24 hours. It is followed by the Lisbon region and the Tagus Valley with 839 new cases and 28 deaths, the Center registers 407 new infections and six deaths, Alentejo with 148 new cases and two deaths, and the Algarve with 34 more infected. As for the islands, Azores has 32 more new cases, while Madeira has seven new infections.

Of the 78 deaths, 46 people were over 80 years old (21 men and 25 women), 19 were between 70 and 79 years old (10 men and eleven women), nine were between 60 and 69 years old (eight men and one woman), three between 50 and 59 years old (two men and one woman) and one man were between 30 and 39 years old.

There are 50 municipalities with more than 960 new cases for every 100,000 inhabitants in a cumulative incidence for 14 days (between November 12 and 25). Some of the most affected places are, for example, Amarante, Belmonte, Chaves, Freixo de Espada à Cinta, Mondim de Basto and Penafiel. There are ten municipalities on the list of those least affected by the pandemic (with less than 20 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), specifically in the Azores, such as Corvo, Lajes do Pico and Lajes das Flores. On the continent, Portel (Évora) and Vila Velha de Ródão (Castelo Branco) are also some of the places with the lowest incidence of covid-19.
