This year, Porto will not have a Christmas tree in front of the City Hall. The opening party of the lights will not be held on Avenida dos Aliados and the New Year’s pyrotechnics has also been canceled.

Due to the pandemic situation, the Municipality of Invicta also decided to suspend the celebration schedule, which would include concerts on the Avenue, ice rinks in different parts of the city, street theaters, children’s stories, mini-concerts touring the center.

Even so, according to the note published on the municipality’s website, “the announced measures do not compromise the lighting of the streets of the city, a tradition that is already ingrained and highly appreciated and that, in the current context, becomes even more relevant to energize traditional trade “. .

The Christmas Tree, which annually illuminates the Town Halls, will not be set up this year, since “its existence could become the focus of crowds of people,” explained the municipality. On New Year’s Eve, “the 12 chimes of the City Hall clock will not be accompanied by fireworks, which in recent years have brought thousands of people from Porto and visitors to Avenida dos Aliados.”

In the note, the Câmara do Porto also appealed to citizens who choose to anticipate their Christmas purchases, “so as not to overload the city’s commerce in the days leading up to December 25”.
