Pope says the pleasure of eating and having sex is “simply divine” – Observer

The journalist and founder of the “Slow Food” movement launched a book of interviews with Pope Francis where he maintains that the pleasure of eating and also sexual pleasure have a divine origin.

The statement came in response to the journalist, who assured that “the Catholic Church has always canceled pleasure, as if it were something to avoid.” Disagreeing, the Pope said that although the Catholic Church condemned “inhuman and vulgar pleasure,” it accepted “human and sober” pleasure.

And then he argued that pleasure has a divine origin and spoke specifically of the pleasure of eating and the pleasure of having sex:

Pleasure comes directly from God. He’s not Catholic, he’s not Christian or anything, he’s just divine. The pleasure of eating serves to maintain good health when eating, just as sexual pleasure exists to beautify love and guarantee the continuity of the species ”.

This is an extract from three interviews granted by Pope Francis to Carlo Petrini and which were published in the book “Terrafutura – Dialoghi with Papa Francesco Sull’Ecologia Integrale”. The first interview took place in 2018, the second in 2019, and the third in July 2020, with the Covid-19 pandemic marking the latter.

On the Covid-19 pandemic, he said that “humanity is crushed by this virus and by many others that we have cultivated, these unfair viruses that are a wild market economy and violent social injustice.”
