The president of the Parish Council of Ponta Delgada, in the municipality of São Vicente, in Madeira, described yesterday as a “tragedy” the consequences of the rains that devastated the town, causing floods, overflowing streams, damage to roads and homes.

“And now, we have to forget about this Christmas day,” Miguel Freitas told Lusa, highlighting that “it seems that the situation [tempo] it will be stable, at least, that’s what is expected ”.

For the mayor, “the situation now is to clean and wait for the machines to do their job and minimize the chances that things will go wrong.”

During this day, he continued, “we are going to make the aftermath of this tragedy that, for me and as mayor, I qualify as a tragedy,” he said.

“The streets were practically impassable, we are only doing the cleaning work now, I know that there are many houses that were damaged but, fortunately, we had no human losses, at least until now there is no information in that regard and the damage was only materials” , he stressed.

For Miguel Freitas, the rains, which had the most critical period between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., “were not absorbed by the soils and the streams could not make the immense water flow and they overflowed onto other roads.”

Roads, houses, cemetery and the church area were, for the mayor, the places most affected by the storm.

“The Primeira Lombada area is isolated, it is not convenient to move, but people are safe, they are well and there are no reports of human damage,” he observed.

Miguel Freitas also points out that the machines of the Chamber and the Regional Directorate of Roads are already working and “now we have to wait” until today “we see the real losses.”

Madeira was under a yellow meteorological alert due to precipitation yesterday, and the Observatory registered 161 mm in Porto Moniz at 6:00 p.m.
