A former socialist leader came to light today to criticize the prime minister and the mayor of Lisbon for being part of the honor committee of Luís Filipe Vieira in his re-election to the presidency of Sport Lisboa e Benfica.
“15 days ago, António Costa recommended that the members of the Government not comment on the presidential elections,” Pedro Adão e Silva, who supports the candidate João Noronha Lopes for the presidency of Benfica, began writing on social media.
“Today his support for Luís Filipe Vieira was known in the Benfica elections. A contradiction, an unnecessary promiscuity and a test that politicians do not learn ”, declared the sociologist and professor of the ISCTE-IUL, who was a member of the National Secretariat of the PS in the direction of Ferro Rodrigues between 2002 and 2004.
The newspaper Expresso reported today that the socialists António Costa and Fernando Medina are going to join the committee of honor of the renowned Luís Filipe Vieira to the presidency of Benfica.
The list contains more than 500 names from various areas and different political neighborhoods: the former Minister of Internal Administration of a PS Government, Rui Pereira; PSD deputy Duarte Pacheco; the deputy of the CDS, Telmo Correia; the president of the Seixal City Council for CDU, Joaquim Santos; António Saraiva, President of the Confederação Empresarial de Portugal,
Both the prime minister’s office and the Lisbon mayor’s office said the support was in the condition of Benfica’s partners, according to Expresso.
The candidate João Noronha Lopes himself has already made a public comment on the case, promising that it will separate the waters between the sports world and the political world. “No honor committee, list or advisory body presented by this candidacy will include politicians in executive functions,” he said.
“Each one will draw their conclusions about the presence of the Prime Minister in the honor committee of Luís Filipe Vieira, but we take the opportunity to ensure that this candidacy is always due to the scrupulous separation between politics and football,” he wrote on social networks.
Among his supporters, Noronha Lopes has the support of the comedian Ricardo Araújo Pereira, Pedro Ribeiro (from Rádio Comercial), the manager Pedro Norton or the filmmaker António-Pedro Vasconcelos, as announced by Tribuna Expresso on July 25.
