Pingo Doce already has disposable masks for sale in more than 400 stores across the country. In Madeira, this protective equipment begins to be sold in the supermarkets of the Jerónimo Martins chain as of Saturday, Jerónimo Martins revealed today in a statement quoted by the national media.
The announcement comes on the same day that the Government is preparing to announce the gradual reopening of the economy, after the end of the State of Emergency decreed after the covid-19 pandemic.
This protection equipment is sold in boxes of 50 units, each unit costs 44 cents plus 23% VAT, which will then be reduced to 6% as soon as the rate reduction is published in Diário da República.
The masks that the supermarket chain put on sale this Wednesday, April 29, consist of three layers of protection, with easily adjustable side elastics.
“In view of the great demand that is being registered, Pingo Doce remains committed to providing these and other individual protection solutions at more affordable prices,” the chain highlights in the same note.
This week, competitor Sonae announced that it will start selling reusable textile masks developed in Portugal.
The team is the result of a partnership with Estamparia Adalberto, the Citeve technology center, the Institute of Molecular Medicine of the University of Lisbon and the University of Minho. At an individual cost of 10 euros, this product is already available in the MO brand online store and includes free delivery.
This week, it will be on sale in physical stores of other Sonae brands, such as Well’s and Continente.
In view of the recommendations of the General Directorate of Health for the use of masks in closed spaces, the general director of the Portuguese Association of Distribution Companies said, in an interview with Rádio Renascença, that supermarkets will start selling social masks in fabrics or surgical. Gonçalo Lobo Xavier also guaranteed that these masks will be sold at prices close to cost value.
