Tonight, a couple of pilgrims invaded the Fatima Shrine prayer compound, which is closed with bars for closed-door pilgrimage celebrations, and was detained by guards at the Shrine and by GNR soldiers, after being detained.

He is an Irish man, 48 years old, who is a believer and is usually in Fatima. He is not related to the 40-year-old Portuguese, who took advantage of that moment to enter the premises.

The incident was devalued by GNR, who considered it a “unique” situation and that “the device deployed for the pilgrimage was up to the challenge.” Both the man and the woman were detained and removed from the prayer room, leading them outside, where they continued their pilgrimage.

The incident occurred when the rosary prayer was scheduled to begin at 9:30 p.m.

The man, who was carrying a photo with the image of Our Lady of Fatima and intended to go to Capelinha das Aparições, jumped the bars and the guards alerted him to return. He did not obey, ignored the instructions, and ended up jumping the barriers, entering the prayer room on the north side.

He was arriving at the exterior area of the apparitions chapel, in a great hurry and chased by GNR soldiers and security guards at the Sanctuary of Fatima, when he was finally arrested and removed from the compound.

The woman, who was carrying a cross and praying, took the moment to enter the prayer room, was also removed from the place and held.

The Sanctuary of Fatima is making the pilgrimage on May 12 and 13, this year behind closed doors, due to the risk of contamination by the new coronavirus. The celebrations are chaired by the Bishop of Leiria-Fátima, D. António Marto.
