The first cases of Covid-19 arrived in Portugal on March 2 and to commemorate that date, a photographic exhibition opens on September 8, bringing together more than 130 photographers, on the pandemic experienced in Portugal.
The “Diário de Uma Pandemia” exhibition consists of four modules, divided into two floors, which have photography and information as the common thread.
On the first floor of Galeria CC11 is the project that began on the social network Instagram and quickly gained notoriety and recognition from thousands of followers. This photographic project brought together 119 Portuguese photographers and photojournalists. “Isolation, the sense of confinement, the new reality of the masks, the dynamics in hospitals, homes, political moments and even funerals, are some of the subjects portrayed”, as described by photojournalist Miguel A. Lopes, one of the founders of the project. , together with Gonçalo Borges Dias. To curate this module of the exhibition, photojournalists Daniel Rocha, Ilídio Teixeira, Luís Filipe Catarino and Tiago Miranda were invited, who selected around 90 photographs that are part of an exhibition tour. “Our story will certainly have other moments, but there was only one opportunity to record this. It will be the time capsule of this time that we live ”, reads the text of the curators.
Another space in the same gallery was dedicated entirely to covering the pandemic through international agencies that have collaborators in Portugal. The agencies represented are Agence France-Presse (AFP), Associated Press (AP), Getty Images, Reuters and Agência Lusa / EPA. “While many stayed to work in the security of their homes, the correspondents – like other essential workers – stayed outside four walls: they showed the world the neighborhoods of Lisbon without tourists, the chaos of hospitals, the masses without believers, among many others. moments that marked a period never before lived, ”reports Catarina Demony, Reuters correspondent in Portugal.
The covers of the newspapers are also important in this exhibition. During the time of confinement, many, if not all, were covered about the Covid-19 pandemic. With photos, phrases or illustrations that will go down in the history of the national press. These newspaper and magazine covers are also displayed in this exhibition.
Editor João Paulo Cotrim, who selected these press clippings, says: “The mask has become the general face, making everyone a little more equal, except the individuals. We dance behind the curtains, says a plate, but we still distinguish ages and pains, the passage of time, in the fluttering of gray hair, in the wrinkles of the hand ”.
The photographer Luísa Ferreira, author of numerous exhibitions and books, was invited to exhibit according to her “critical and intimate view of the pandemic.” “Claro e Escuro” is the name of this exhibition by the photographer who won the 2019 Authors Award, Visual Arts and Best Photographic Work.
During the opening period of the show, CC11 also organizes a series of events such as viewing documentaries and television reports followed by conversations with the authors, book presentations, debates and conferences. As they are face-to-face activities, in accordance with the containment plan prepared, the events will be announced one week in advance, requiring prior registration or confirmation of presence.
This exhibition will be open from September 8 to October 31, 2020 at Galeria CC11, at Rua do Centro Cultural 11, in Alvalade, Lisbon. Admission is free and the use of a mask is mandatory.
The CC11 cultural association was founded at the beginning of 2020 and aims to spread and promote photography and photojournalism in Portugal.
