A pharmacist died and the company owner was hospitalized after trying a drug they had developed in hopes of finding a cure for Covid-19, Indian officials said Saturday.
The owner of the company and home in Chennai, East India, where the drug was being developed, Raj Kumar, is hospitalized and one of the employees with more than 20 years of experience at the company died after trying the medicine. Sivanesan lost his life at the age of 47, after he asked the authorities about a month ago for special authorization to move in with his boss during the country’s quarantine, to try to find a cure for Covid-19.
Sivanesan and the boss reportedly developed the drug through internet research and purchased the ingredients from a local market. This was the first time that the two men, responsible for the development of various natural and Ayurvedic treatments, risked developing a medication with the chemicals used in traditional medicine.writes the New Indian Express newspaper.
According to one of the company’s employees, some of the colleagues were sent to work at the home of the Sujatha Bio-Tech owner, where the drug was being developed. “We arrived at the house in the morning and at the end of the day we returned home,” he explained to the newspaper.
The same official added further details to what happened during the drug test, although the results of the autopsy on Sivanesan’s body are not yet officially known. “On Thursday, Sivanesan gave the first dose to Dr. Raj Kumar, a solution that contained sodium nitrate. After the doctor swallowed a small dose of the drug, he passed out, but 10 minutes later he was conscious and well. Hoping that everything was fine, Sivanesan also took the medicine and was unconscious. We immediately took him to the hospital, which is only 100 meters away, but the doctors transferred us to another private hospital. However, Sivanesa died on the way to the hospital, ”explained the worker, who was not identified by the Indian publication.
Currently, there is no medicine or vaccine for Covid-19, which has led to a worldwide race to find a cure for this disease that has already killed nearly 300,000 people.
In India, around 60,000 cases of contamination have already been identified, and the government has imposed severe measures to contain the new coronavirus.
