The Cabedelo neighborhood association, which was present at the protest against this logging, foreseen in the access works to the Port of Viana do Castelo, launched an “extrajudicial work embargo” to stop the logging, but the attempt to continue the work led some protesters to hug the tree.
In statements to the Lusa agency, the president of the neighborhood association, Mariana Rocha Neves, explained that the extrajudicial embargo of works is a legal figure “that allows the work to be stopped immediately so that, in five days, the judicial process can be formalized . ”.
“The extrajudicial seizure of works is carried out at an early stage, informally, but it has immediate and suspensive effects. The person in charge of the work was informed of this fact and if he disobeys he will commit a crime. Within five days we will present an action before the Administrative and Tax Court of Braga ”, explained the lawyer, who lives in that place in the parish of Darque, on the left bank of the Lima river.
The PSP agents present at the site informed the person in charge of the work about this legal process, but around 10:18 the workers tried to start the work, having been prevented by the people who hugged the tree.
In addition to the two patrol cars initially present at the scene, the PSP mobilized police reinforcements.
On Friday, the Viana do Castelo City Council announced that today the last phase of the three million euro contract to improve access to the Viana do Castelo seaport has begun.
In a statement sent to Lusa, the municipality of Viana do Castelo said that the project aims to “attract new economic activities to the area of influence of Porto, reduce the operating costs inherent to the connection times of the highway in Porto to the main centers of activity, reducing noise and polluting emissions, increasing traffic safety and helping to decongest road traffic, eliminating heavy traffic from urban roads “.
The municipality also warned that the works will require traffic conditioning today and Tuesday to cut down some two dozen of the 170 trees (plantains) on the avenue.
With the aim of “minimizing the impact” of this tree felling, the municipality plans to invest 30 thousand euros in the planting of 200 native resinous and leafy trees with a large carbon reserve capacity, such as maritime pine and cork oak. over the next two years in various areas of Cabedelo.
The objective of this action “is to restore, but also to reinforce, the CO2 sequestration capacity in that territory and also contribute to the improvement of the landscape, climate comfort and places that can be enjoyed,” said the chamber, chaired by the socialist José María. Coast.
