The Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Pedro Nuno Santos, said this Thursday in Parliament that 1,200 TAP workers have already left and that by the end of the year these departures will reach 1,600.

Asked by Isabel Pires, from the Bloco de Esquerda, if 1,500 crew members left the board, the official guaranteed that it would be a figure “without attachment to reality”, since it would correspond to 80% of the workforce.

Regarding the restructuring plan that the airline must deliver in Brussels on December 10, Pedro Nuno Santos stressed that the deadlines will be met and may even be anticipated, adding that the objectives of the document “are to guarantee the sustainability of the airline.”

“We will have to seek solutions that offer us, in a context of high uncertainty, the minimum guarantees of the company’s sustainability. The best way to guarantee employment is to have a sustainable company,” he said.

The minister declined to anticipate conclusions “of a work that is being carried out, but stressed that, within the framework of the restructuring process, a” resizing of the company “will be carried out with” impact in all areas. “We cannot do another thing way, keeping jobs that later have no work, “he said.

Pedro Nuno Santos said that TAP is operating at 30% but “it will rise slightly”, highlighting that it is not because he wants to, but because “there is no demand, there are no clients.” In fact, he pointed out that some routes are operating with a capacity of less than 50%, which is insufficient for them to be viable.

Regarding the choice of Boston Consulting Group, Pedro Nuno Santos stressed that the restructuring process “is complex and cannot be carried out without a specialized consulting firm in the area.”
