Spain with 8,959 more cases and 40 deaths
Spain recorded 8,959 new cases of COVID-19 today, an increase of almost 400 compared to Wednesday, which brings the number of infected to 488,513 since the beginning of the pandemic, according to figures released by the Spanish Ministry of Health.
The country has more than 40 deaths from the disease reported in the last 24 hours, increasing the total number of deaths to 29,234.
Madrid continues to be the autonomous community with the highest number of new infections, 3,077 of those registered today, more than a third of the national total. 1,067 people have been admitted to hospitals with the disease since Wednesday, 306 in Madrid, 149 in Andalusia and 106 in Catalonia.
810 people with the new coronavirus have been discharged from the hospital, which means the number of hospitalized patients is increasing, with 7,194 people hospitalized across the country.
UK records 13 deaths and 1,735 new infections
The United Kingdom recorded 13 deaths and 1,735 new cases of COVID-19 infection in the last 24 hours, a worsening for the second day in a row, according to data from the British Ministry of Health.
As of Wednesday, 10 deaths and 1,508 new infections had been reported.
The cumulative total since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic is now 41,514 deaths and 340,411 contagion cases, according to the British government.
The number of infections has been on the rise in various parts of the UK, especially in the Glasgow region of Scotland and the Manchester region of northern England, where restrictions on social contact have been imposed.
The head of the Scottish government, Nicola Sturgeon, admitted today that the contagion index ‘R’ will be between 1 and 1.4, reflecting a higher level of transmission of the disease
The index is defined as the average number of people to whom an infected person can transmit the virus. For example, if a person develops an infection and passes it to two other people, the index value would be 2.
