A house located in Ribeira Funda, in the parish of São Jorge, in Santana, was “very damaged” yesterday due to a collapse that occurred behind the house, this being the most serious situation reported in the municipality of Santana after the strong weather that Christmas Day caused several floods and landslides in the north of the island.

Speaking to JM, Dinarte Fernandes, mayor of Santana, said that the roads that lead to Rocha de Baixo and Terras de Fora, also in the parish of São Jorge, are still closed.

In addition, the storm caused, in the municipality of Santana, small landslides and some floods in homes, however, there was “nothing serious” to report. “Fortunately, we have not seen any significant damage,” the mayor told JM.

The road cleaning works carried out throughout today are expected to continue during the next few days. The municipality is currently cleaning up one of the roads affected by the landslides, with two more situations of falling stones whose intervention is necessary.

Dinarte Fernandes also affirms that the regional access road to the Ilha parish was clear during the morning of this Friday, according to the newspaper.

Work continues on the ground with teams from the Santana City Council and the São Jorge City Council. The resources of the Regional Government were in charge of cleaning the regional roads, and the municipality requested the help of the AFA company for the opening of a gallery that allowed access to one of the tunnels that will be inaugurated in the future, to access the Arch from São Jorge, which leads to Terras de Fora, the fajã that was blocked by bad weather.
