The Order of Nurses (OE) accused, this Tuesday, the management of the Centro Hospitalar do Tâmega e Sousa (CHTS) of placing “professionals without experience in intensive care” to care for patients with covid-19 and of having substituted nurses for video surveillance.

“Video surveillance cameras were installed, which is clearly illegal and, as such, rejected by professionals,” says the Order in a statement, stating that “the board of directors [do CHTS], at first he agreed with the nurses, deciding that the unit should remain at level 2 [sem doentes ventilados], pending the creation of new facilities ”, but the situation has changed.

According to the OE, “in the face of the threat of dismissal by the director of the Intensive Care Service, the situation remains so far”, having been reported to the Ministry of Health, the National Data Protection Commission and the Public Ministry.

The OE describes that, at the Penafiel Hospital, one of the CHTS units, “covid-19 patients who need ventilation are admitted to a unit without conditions” and cared for by “professionals without experience in intensive care.”

“The complaint was made to the Order and is signed by a group of nurses who were placed in this unit without having received any training and integration in intensive care, and who consider that the adopted situation compromises the health of the patients and does not guarantee the terms”. nursing practice with quality and safety ”, reads the statement.

The OE describes that “the team does not have the necessary skills to provide the required care”, therefore “it is civilly and disciplinary responsible for accidents or incidents that may occur as a result of the lack of knowledge to provide care.”

CHTS joins the hospitals of Penafiel and Amarante and last month registered 10% of hospitalizations for covid-19 at the national level, registering the peak on November 3 with a peak of 235 patients hospitalized with the new coronavirus.

The OE also denounces “anomalous physical conditions of the structure and organization of the service”, being according to the OE “the lack of conditions of surveillance and care for patients with ventilated covid-19.”

The Lusa agency contacted CHTS who, through a written message, said that today it would not be possible to respond to the request for clarification.
