The opening hours of the hypermarkets next weekend in the municipality of Braga have not yet been determined. Speaking to O MINHO, the mayor explains that, if it depends on the autarky, they only open at 08:00.

Already in statements to Porto CanalRicardo Rio explains that it is an “ambiguity, because in a general regime, the protection of the hours of large stores, not only shopping centers but also supermarkets or hypermarkets, are not under the direct responsibility of city councils.”

The mayor recalls that in March, when Braga decreed “zero hours”, these types of establishments responded directly to the tutelage of the Ministry of Economy, so they were not covered by the municipal decision.

Ricardo Rio says that the rules of the Council of Ministers on hypermarket hours “leave doubts about who is responsible for guardianship.”

“Therefore, in our understanding, the general regime is maintained, but in the understanding of other municipalities it has now been determined by the municipalities”, as was the case of Lisbon or Cascais, which have already announced that hypermarkets only open after 8 in the morning. : 00.

Ricardo Rio affirms that, if guardianship is transferred to the local authority, large establishments and shopping centers “can only open after 8:00 am”

“We are two days away from the weekend when this circumstance is going to occur for the first time and it seems to me that the doubt in relation to the operators has crept in, not only from the large stores but even from the small cafes” .

“This is not entirely clear and I think that the effect of the measures adopted is very lost,” he adds.

Ricardo Río asks the Council of Ministers, which meets this Thursday, to unequivocally clarify the rules to be adopted.
