One of the Brazilian volunteers who participated in the trial of the vaccine against the new coronavirus, which is being developed by the University of Oxford in association with the pharmaceutical company Astrazeneca, has died. The news was released on Wednesday by Anvisa, the National Health Surveillance Agency of Brazil. The death occurred on the 19th, Monday, but only now has it been reported.

Anvisa did not provide details about the volunteer or the cause of death, due to the confidentiality clauses that guarantee the preservation of the volunteers’ data. It was also not revealed whether the deceased volunteer actually received a dose of the Oxford vaccine or a placebo, a no-effect substance used as a comparison.

The vaccine developed by the University of Oxford and Astrazeneca is in phase three, which tests the efficacy and safety of the substance.

Also according to Anvisa, the International Safety Assessment Committee recommended the continuation of vaccine tests while the procedures to analyze the circumstances of death continue. In early September, tests were stopped in all countries participating in the studies after an English volunteer had serious health problems, but were resumed days later when it was discovered that these problems were not related to the vaccine.
