Four PSP agents and an off-duty firefighter rescued a mother and two young daughters from the terrace of a burning house in Covilhã. The fire occurred in the early hours of Sunday.
The alert for a fire in a room arrived, via 112, to the PSP at 5.46 am on Sunday morning. Two cars from the Covilhã division rushed to the scene. Upon arrival, the four police officers realized that three people – a mother and two minor daughters – had taken refuge on the balcony on the first floor of the house to escape the flames.
“Without hesitation,” describes a statement from the Castelo Branco PSP, the agents, with the help of an off-duty firefighter, climbed onto the balcony and managed to remove the victims and bring them to safety. Then, with the help of a garden hose, they partially put out the fire and controlled it until firefighters arrived.
The three victims received hospital treatment at the Local Health Unit and all would eventually be discharged. One of the police officers involved also required hospital treatment for smoke inhalation, but was also discharged.
