New Year’s break with mandatory curfew from 11:00 p.m.

On New Year’s Eve, from December 31 to January 1, there will be a curfew from 11:00 p.m. and on January 1, 2 and 3 from 1:00 p.m. The measures were announced this Thursday night by the prime minister at the end of the meeting of the Council of Ministers.

“Contrary to what we had announced 15 days ago […] we have to cut the New Year’s celebrations completely, ”said António Costa.

Thus, the prohibition to circulate on public roads is effective from 11:00 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and from 1:00 p.m. on January 1, 02 and 03.

The measures apply to all municipalities in mainland Portugal.

This is the list of special measures for the upcoming Christmas season:

For the Christmas period:

Circulation between municipalities allowed.

Circulation on public roads:

Night from 23 to 24: allowed only for those who travel;
Days 24 and 25: allowed until 02:00 the next day;
Day 26: allowed until 11pm.

Opening hours:

On nights 24 and 25, the restaurant is allowed to operate until 1 am.
On the 26th, the operation of restaurants is allowed until 3:30 p.m. in municipalities of very high and extreme risk.
On the 24th and 25th the closing time does not apply to cultural establishments.

For the New Year period:

Circulation between municipalities:

Prohibited between 00:00 on 12/31 and 05:00 on 04/01.

Circulation on public roads:

For the entire continental territory:

On 12/31, prohibited from 23:00;
On days 1, 2 and 3/01, prohibited from 1:00 p.m.

Opening hours throughout the continental territory:

On 12/31, the restaurant’s operation is allowed until 10:30 pm.
On days 1, 2 and 3/01, the restaurant is allowed to operate until 1 pm, except for home deliveries.

Public parties are forbidden or open to the public.
Meetings on public roads with more than 6 people are prohibited.

The Government also reinforces the call to avoid:

Gather a lot of people;
Be without a mask for a long time;
Closed, small and poorly ventilated spaces.
