New year with almost seven thousand new cases of covid-19

This Friday, there are more than 6,951 infected and 66 deaths from covid-19 in Portugal. Patients admitted to the ward descend.

New year, old disease. One day after Portugal registered a new record number of infected (7627), 2021 begins with 6,951 more cases of contagion, according to today’s epidemiological bulletin of the General Health Directorate, which increases to 420,629 the total number of confirmed cases since March. Of these, almost 75 thousand correspond to active patients. On the other hand, recovered another 4392 people, raising to more than 338 thousand the number of patients considered cured since the beginning of the pandemic.

The northern region has an additional 2,745 infected people, which is equivalent to about 39% of all new infections, bringing the total number of infected people to more than 212,000. It is followed by Lisbon and the Tagus Valley, with 2,131 new infections (and a total of more than 135 thousand). In the Central region, there are more than 1,474 cases (in 49 thousand), in Alentejo more than 308 (in more than 11 thousand) and in the Algarve more than 199 (in almost eight thousand infected). The Azores archipelago registers 53 new cases (in 1885) and Madeira, 41 more cases (1642).

Almost seven thousand dead since March

On the last day of 2020, 66 patients with covid-19 – 6972 died since the start of the pandemic. There were 28 deaths in the north, 23 in Lisbon and Vale do Tejo, 10 in the center, three in the Alentejo, one in the Algarve and one in Madeira.

The vast majority of the victims (41) were over 80 years old, with 16 deaths in the 70-79 age group still mourning, eight in the 60-69 group and one in the 50-59 age group.

The number of patients admitted to the ward has decreased: today there are 34 fewer than yesterday, in a total of 2806. In the intensive care units there is one more patient (total of 483).
