Canadian cyclist Nigel Ellsay (Rally Cycling) fractured his spine and bones in his face after his fall on Tuesday in Volta in Portugal, while the yellow flag had head trauma, but is stable, said a source from the organization.
The same source told the Lusa agency that “the cyclist fractured the bones of his face and spine, having been immediately operated on at the Paredes Hospital”, without information on his condition.
The other injured in the fall, verified during the second stage of the race, who was transported to the São João Hospital, in Porto, suffered a traumatic brain injury, but is stable, said the same source.
Ellsay hit the yellow flag, which was indicated at the beginning of the second lap, in a stage in which the race was going over 60 km / h, both being taken to the hospital.
At the beginning of the second stage, which linked Paredes to the top of Senhora da Graça, in a total of 167 kilometers, the 98 cyclists registered for this Tour of Portugal lined up, with Nigel Ellsay being the first deserter.
