New cases double in 19 northern counties

New cases of covid-19 infection more than doubled, between the last week of December and the first of January, in 19 northern counties and 16 registered an incidence greater than 960.

A report from the Northern Regional Health Administration (ARS-N), to which Lusa had access today, reports the evolution of the epidemiological situation in the North between the penultimate week of December (from 17 to 23) and the first of January (Between the last week of December and the first of January, the number of new cases of infection more than doubled in 19 regions of the northern region: five in the Vila Real district, four in Viana do Castelo, four in Braga , three in Bragança, two in Aveiro and one in Porto.

Boticas, Peso da Régua, Sabrosa, Santa Marta de Penaguião and Valpaços, in the Vila Real district, registered increases of 354%, 170%, 263%, 160% and 139%, respectively. In the district of Viana do Castelo, the municipalities of Paredes de Coura, Ponte de Lima, Viana do Castelo and Vila Nova de Cerveira also registered growth rates above 100%. Cabeceiras de Basto, Celorico de Basto, Vieira do Minho and Vizela, in the district of Braga, also followed this trend. In the Aveiro district, the municipalities of São João da Madeira and Vale de Cambra more than doubled the number of new cases. Penafiel was the only municipality in the Porto district that followed this doubling trend.

In the last 14 days, the report also indicates that 16 counties registered an incidence of more than 960 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants every 14 days, reporting four more counties than the previous report. Of these 16 counties, five are located in the Vila Real district (Boticas, Chaves, Montalegre, Peso da Régua and Ribeira de Pena) and four in the Bragança district (Macedo de Cavaleiros, Miranda do Douro, Mogadouro and Vimioso).

In the district of Braga, the municipalities of Barcelos, Esposende, Póvoa de Lanhoso and Vila Verde also registered an incidence rate of more than 960 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The municipalities of Póvoa de Varzim and Vila do Conde, in the Porto district, and Ponte da Barca, in the Viana do Castelo district, also followed this trend of incidence.

In the same period, 44 municipalities in the North region registered an incidence rate of more than 480 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants every 14 days, reporting four more municipalities compared to the last report. Of these 44 municipalities, 13 are in the Porto district, 10 in the Braga district, seven in Vila Real, six in Viana do Castelo, five in Aveiro and three in Bragança.

The ARS-N report also shows that Miranda do Douro (Bragança) is the municipality in the northern region with the highest incidence rate: 2,942.9 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants every 14 days. Currently, the incidence rate in the North region is 757 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
