New cases detected in 34 municipalities exceed the national average

Of the 308 Portuguese municipalities, 34 registered a number of new confirmed cases of covid-19 per 10,000 inhabitants above the national average, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) published this Friday.

The data appears in the publication “COVID-19: a reading of the demographic context and territorial expression of the pandemic”, which establishes that 34 municipalities registered a number of new confirmed cases with the disease per 10,000 inhabitants, higher than the national average of 13.5 new. cases, according to the analysis carried out in the last seven days until October 18.

In the North region, where there are 24 municipalities that registered a value above the national level and that represent 39% of the region’s population, six municipalities stand out with values ​​greater than 25 new cases per 10,000 inhabitants: Paços de Ferreira (99.6), Lousada (55.4), Felgueiras (27.3), Penafiel (25.2), Paredes (27.9) and Porto (26.0).

In the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (AML), statistical data indicate that four municipalities presented values ​​above the national average and that they represent 46% of the region’s population: Sintra (16.7), Lisbon (15.3 ), Cascais (14.7) and Loures (13.9).

In the Center, the municipalities of Alvaiázere (42.4), Pinhel (28.2) and Arruda dos Vinhos (16.9) are also above the national average for new cases, as in Alentejo the municipalities of Borba ( 20.8), Beja (18.2) and the municipality of Alcoutim (47.7) in the Algarve.

Regarding the number of deaths, in 167 of the 308 Portuguese municipalities, where 68% of the population resides, the number of deaths between September 14 and October 11 was higher than the homologous reference value (average for the same period in 2018 and 2019).

The INE also indicates that 43 municipalities registered a number of deaths 1.5 times higher than that registered in the reference period.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 1.1 million deaths and more than 41.3 million cases of infection worldwide, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

In Portugal, 2,245 people died from 109,541 confirmed cases of infection, according to the most recent bulletin from the Directorate General of Health.
