The Public Ministry (MP) of Braga accused a couple of tax fraud and computer fraud, for allegedly falsifying medical statements and birth certificates to receive social benefits from four children “who never existed.”

In a note published this Monday on his page, the Oporto District Attorney General said that the accused, “at the cost of these stratagems,” unduly received 37,658 euros from Social Security.

According to the indictment, the defendants, who were married to each other, managed, from 2011 to 2019, to obtain from Social Security several social benefits attributed to upbringing, “related to four children that never existed.”

To do this, the defendants falsified medical statements and birth certificates, which they sent to Social Security. Based on the bogus items, benefits were eventually awarded.

Likewise, according to the prosecution, the defendants were also able to reveal to those four children that they did not exist within the scope of the social insertion income, “receiving, therefore, an amount greater than their due.”

Thus, between 2011 and 2019, the defendants unduly received from Social Security the global amount of 37,658 euros, of which 23,809 as family allowance and 4,272 as prenatal allowance. The rest refers to parental benefit.

The defendants are also accused of using the credentials of a daughter and her husband to directly access the Social Security platform and from there, as if they were these, they claim the attribution of social benefits related to their children, their grandchildren, indicating to the respective payment accounts of which only they had availability.

The defendants will respond for four crimes of tax fraud and two crimes of computer fraud.
