More than 40 higher education students in Porto are infected with covid-19, the test began after a student from the University’s ERASMUS program tested positive.

In response to the Lusa agency, ARS-N explained this Thursday that, on Saturday, the health authority of the Agrupación de Centros de Salud (ACES) Porto Oriental learned that a student of the ERASMUS program [de mobilidade académica entre estudantes de todo o mundo] from the University of Porto (U. Porto) tested positive for covid-19.

After “the epidemiological investigation was carried out,” the students’ contacts were tracked and, so far, 49 positive cases associated with this outbreak have been identified, added the ARS-N.

According to ARS-Norte, the process is being monitored by the health authorities, in conjunction with “those responsible for the Educational Institutions.”

For Lusa, the U. Porto communication office stated that “about 40 students” tested positive and that other U. Porto students who were in contact with those infected are in prophylactic isolation.

“The outbreak did not arise in the context of the university,” the communications office said, adding that health authorities are monitoring the situation.

Contacted by Lusa, the Porto Polytechnic Institute declined to comment on the situation, saying it had not received “any contact from the health authorities.”
