The General Directorate of Health (DGS) reported 9,498 additional new cases and another 303 deaths from the pandemic in the last 24 hours.

Hope is in recovery. There are an additional 7,511 in the last 24 hours (526,411 since the start of the pandemic), while the number of people under surveillance dropped in 1,374 to 223,991.
With 303 deaths registered this Sunday, a figure equal to the maximum ever registered on Thursday, in January, 5,576 people died from causes associated with covid-19, more than in the last seven months of 2020. Almost as many as in the All of 2020 of From June to December 5,396 lives were lost, 180 less than in the 31 days that January has taken.
Lisbon with more than half of the cases and deaths of the day
In line with the trend that has been coming almost since the beginning of the year, the Lisbon and Tagus Valley Region (RLVT) reported half of the 303 deaths registered in the last 24 hours. With the 153 deaths registered, there are now 4,835 lives lost by covid-19 around Lisbon, where 262,037 infections have been registered since the beginning of the pandemic, 4,834 in the last 24 hours, more than half of the national daily total and also the highest record among DGS defined regions.
Mortality, which has been increasing in the Central Region during the month, reached its highest level on the last day of January: 77 more people died in the central area of the country, where 2,201 lives have been lost since the start of the pandemic. . The cases dropped slightly, as usual on Sunday, to 1,385, and the cumulative number reached 102,535.
The North Region (RN), where the epidemic was first detected in March 2020, continues to register more cases than any other, despite the downward trend in recent days. This Sunday, RN reported 2,561 new infections, for a cumulative of 306,232. By registering 48 more deaths, the northernmost part of the country laments the loss of 4501 lives since the SARS-CoV-2 virus entered the country.
In Alentejo, 16 more deaths were reported (667 since the start of the pandemic), in one day with 254 cases registered (24,931 in total).
Further south, the Algarve added 233 new infections (17,238 in total) and five more deaths (210 since the start of the pandemic).
Death returned to the Azores. With one more life lost, there are now 25 deaths in the Azores islands, which reported 40 more infections, for a total of 3506.
In Madeira, three more deaths (43 in total) and 101 cases of covid-19 were reported, with a total of more than four thousand (4055) since the start of the pandemic.
About 72% of deaths were over 80 years old
The pandemic particularly affects older people, and the most recent records are proof of the frailty of older people among the more experienced Portuguese. Of the 303 deaths reported, 217 (97 men and 120 women) were registered in the age group older than 80 years, that is, 72% of the total victims in the last 24 hours, 8,416 since the start of the pandemic.
In the age group 70 to 79, 48 deaths (29 men and 19 women) were reported, for a total of 2,546 since the start of the pandemic.
In the immediately preceding age group, 60-69 years, there were 31 deaths (21 men and 10 women), of which 1,052 were lost in this category.
In a day with six more deaths (four men and two women), the 50-59-year-old group has lost 318 lives since the pandemic began.
In a bulletin without victims to register in the age group of 40 to 49 years, the death of a woman in the age group of 30 to 39 recalls that covid-19, which is more penalizing for the elderly, also kills the youngest: there are 30 victims under 40 years of age since the start of the pandemic.
