An image of António Costa with Luís Filipe Vieira is going viral on social networks. After the name of António Costa was part of Vieira’s re-evaluation honor committee for the Benfica presidency and Vieira’s alleged debt with Novo Banco, several publications related to the issues emerged.

In the image that we see below, which was shared by more than 40 thousand users on Facebook, António Costa appears with Luís Filipe Vieira with a sign that says “if you don’t forgive Benfica’s debt, I will resign.”

The publication was under review in the fact-checking program of TVI Moment of Truth, where, in alliance with the Observer, it is intended to verify the facts that are viralized on social networks.

This image appeared even before António Costa’s support for Vieira was known, but it ended up gaining momentum after that fact was revealed.

Analyzing the facts, we can see that the original photograph was taken in 2014. That day, the then mayor of Lisbon was watching a Benfica-Porto in the presidential box.

In his hands he had a poster, but it said something very different, and it served to pay tribute to Eusébio, former glory of Portuguese football and Benfica who had died the week before the match in which the photograph was taken.

Indeed, and having verified all the data, António Costa did not hold the poster of the publication that went viral, nor is there evidence that the phrase was said by the current prime minister.

Thus, and in the classification scale used in the Moment of Truth, the content of this Facebook post is incorrect.
