The price of electricity on the regulated market will remain unchanged next year, according to the proposal announced today by the Energy Services Regulatory Authority.

ERSE notes that this proposal was made “in a context of uncertainty due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with a potentially strong impact on the level of demand for electricity.”

The regulated market has around one million consumers, while the liberalized market has 5.3 million customers. Portugal has a total of 6.29 million electricity customers.

Even customers who are already in the liberalized market can opt for a rate with prices equivalent to those charged in the regulated market.

What changes have been made to rates in recent years? Up to 1.2% in 2017, 0.2% in 2018, 3.5% in 2019 and 2.7% in 2020.

The regulator recalls that in April of this year there was a downward revision of the energy rate -in the amount of five euros per megawatt hour- “and that this was reflected in a reduction in the transitory rate of sale to end customers it will be valid until December “.

Although the rate does not change, there are the “trends seen in the futures markets for the prices of fossil fuels (oil and coal) and for the demand for electricity, which are naturally affected by great uncertainty generated by the current Covid-19 health crisis. ”.
