The President of the Madeira government considered this Friday “almost suicidal” that the island teams should travel to mainland Portugal, due to the covid-19 pandemic, recalling that these trips are not prohibited.

“The evolution of the pandemic is such that, from my point of view, it is almost suicidal that our teams switch to the practice of contact or team sports,” said Miguel Albuquerque, during a visit to the completed construction works of the new Sports center discovered by Francisco Franco secondary school.

In the opinion of the head of the Regional Government of the PSD / CDS coalition, these movements are “very risky” and may have “consequences for security” in the region, one of the main objectives of the archipelago executive “not to allow the creation of local sprouts “. for a situation like this. “

Miguel Albuquerque devalued the criticism made by the federations to the measures adopted by the Council of Regional Government of Madeira, on Thursday, emphasizing that the Regional Executive is not “prohibiting the participation of teams” in sporting events abroad.

“There are conditions of double testing and isolation until insertion in areas, especially those that are more sensitive, such as the social area, schools and public health,” he added.

The island president said that “the federations must adjust to the primary interests of the community, of a country, of society”, reinforcing that “next weekend there will be no more championships.”

The matches of the amateur sports competitions scheduled for the weekend were canceled, due to the restrictions imposed to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus, maintaining the calendar for soccer leagues I and II.

“The decision to suspend non-professional activities was reaffirmed by the Government to the sports federations this Thursday and we ask for a better understanding of all to comply with it,” reads the joint statement of the handball, basketball, futsal and hockey federations. on roller skates and volleyball.

Miguel Albuquerque argued that this decision is based on “establishing priorities” and “caring for and safeguarding public health”, highlighting that, being “associations and federations linked to sports, being a school of civic values, they must set an example.”

“Therefore, I have no problem making these decisions, because it is so clear in a conflict of values what is at stake that I have no difficulty in doing so,” he said.
