Jordanian authorities detained a member of the royal family, a former aide to the Jordanian king and an unknown number of people on Saturday as part of an arrest campaign “for security reasons”.

According to the Jordanian official Petra agency, Bassem Awadallah, a former adviser to King Abdullah II and former Minister of Finance, was detained along with Sharif Hasan bin Zaid, a member of the royal family, “for security reasons.”

The two are among an unknown number of detainees, the agency added, citing a source from the security services.

Awadallah was appointed head of the royal court in 2007 and his last post in the Jordanian government was that of special envoy to Saudi Arabia.

The Al Arabiya channel said the arrests include “people close to Prince Hamzah bin Hussein,” the king’s brother and former crown prince, whose current whereabouts are unknown, but this information has not been officially confirmed.

The source of the security services said that the investigations continue and that interrogations are being carried out with the detainees, without specifying, however, how many people are involved.
